Okkervil River
  • Okkervil River

CAT'S CRADLEChampions of melodrama scribed through lyrics pitting extreme innocence against violent upheaval and arrangements contrasting serenity and storm and stress, Austin's Okkervil River moves in commanding emotional sweeps. At his best ("Abilene"), opener Damien Jurado can make someone suffer a memory like a present-tense body punch. $10 tickets for a 9:30 p.m. show. —Grayson Currin

Chapel Hill
LOCAL 506—For better and six, Rock Plaza Central feels like the culmination of post-Elephant 6 Collective indie pop realignment. That is, the Jeff Mangum vocal urgency comes front and center, but the arrangements—horns, chants, aux percussion, etc.—speak more to bands that happened after Neutral Milk Hotel. They are from Canada. O'Death and the charming Carol Bui open at 9 p.m. for $8. —Grayson Currin

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH—Bart Ehrman, head of religious studies at UNC-CH, will deliver a lecture at 7 p.m. based on his book Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why. The work explores how and why Biblical texts were altered and misquoted by scribes—with often far-reaching consequences. Visit www.regbook.com or call 286-2700 for more information. —Ashley Roberts
