THE WAYBACKS
HIDEAWAY BBQ—As bluegrass bandits, San Francisco group The Waybacks pickpocket handfuls of musical style, twisting tokens of new grass, jug band, new country swing and gypsy jazz into an acoustic maelstrom that will knock you down with high-octane string power. If you missed them at Merlefest, catch them here before they head back west. The band plays at 8:30 p.m. The fan pays $12. —Kathy Justice

SPIDER BAGS, GOODNIGHT LOVING
RESERVOIR—A Tuesday night party at the Reservoir: If things end well, expect Spider Bags, on the heels of a solid debut on California's Birdman, to end the night spewing their twisted and gnarled, something-like-country-moan songs into a floor covered in slime of unequal parts domestic beer suds and N.C. summer sweat. They'll greet Northern allies Goodnight Loving (from Milwaukee, just like Schlitz), who mine Muscle Shoals grit with a Midwestern love of the epic solo. Aside from having the best band name ever, Vancouver's Vancougar are a feisty female four-piece looking for a dance party. Inevitable genre- and gender-based comparisons to The Shangri-Las hold water, as Vancougar's enthusiasm for pop music and quixotic lyrics are funneled through a garagish naiveté. Great bill. The free show begins at 10 p.m. —Grayson Currin
