Raleigh
Lucinda Williams
Memorial Auditorium—Sometimes, it takes great artists years to make the albums and get the credit they need. Lucinda Williams hit a special stride with 1998's Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, and, now 55, she's yet to let up too much. Buick 6 opens for her tonight at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30-$35. For more, see Hearing Aid.

Chapel Hill
North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra
Memorial Hall—A traditional big band, the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra premieres a piece written for the group by jazz pianist and composer, Kenny Werner. Werner once played and composed for the hard-hitting Mel Lewis Orchestra—now the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra—and achieves a light-hearted and free sound in smaller settings. It will be interesting to hear what he has in store for soloists and UNC Department of Music faculty, James Ketch (trumpet and music director) and Stephen Anderson (piano). The new piece is part of the NCJR)'s commitment not just to preserve jazz but to develop jazz, too. Pay $10-$20 at 7:30 p.m. —Andrew Ritchey
