Carolina Theatre—"Lately I've been glaring into mirrors/ picking myself apart," Ani DiFranco sang last year. Interesting, as one actually wonders at what point DiFranco will stop opening doors or allowing for an easy definition. An excellent guitar player who lives her life and its battles on tape, DiFranco long stood as a lesbian icon. But, after one unsuccessful marriage, DiFranco gave birth to her first child in 2007 and married its father two years later. Her Righteous Babe Records is among today's most successful independent labels, but it's never worked for mainstream status. DiFranco's latest, last year's Red Letter Days, isn't her strongest work, but—full of textural idiosyncrasy and unorthodox arrangement options—it supremely illustrates DiFranco's need to sit still or be defined. Pay $31-$34 for the 8 p.m. show. DiFranco is a dynamo on stage. —Grayson Currin
