The Ciompi Quartet

Rare Book Room, Duke Campus—Franz Schubert wasn't far from death himself when he lifted the theme from one of his earlier popular songs—Der Tod und das Mädchen, or Death and the Maiden—for the second movement of his 14th string quartet. That tune was about a woman requesting a pardon from her darkest of visitors, and so these movements are full of drama and urgency, too. In fact, beware the fourth: It leaps ahead and lags behind, stretching itself like a trip wire alongside a steep fall. This afternoon delight is the penultimate concert in the season's free series of lunchtime offerings with Duke classical treasure The Ciompi Quartet. It starts at noon with a brief discussion, and attendees are encouraged to eat while the strings shake. See www.dukeperformances.org. —Grayson Currin
