Pearl Diver
The Barn at Fearrington--In its quest to make Chatham County a nexus of sustainable arts and cinema, the ChathamArts Council recently inaugurated a film series designed to give local and independent filmmakers much-deserved exposure. The key to the project lies in its title, 100-Mile Film Series: Sustainable Cinema, with the series firmly committed to screening celluloid with a production history contained within the stated 100-mile radius. The inaugural event features the much lauded, award-winning work of Chapel Hill filmmaker Sidney Ryan King in a screening of Pearl Diver, King's haunting take on murder and tragedy in a well-scrubbed Mennonite community that holds a bevy of secrets and lies under its sunny surface. Come early to mingle with local cinephiles and stay late for a Q&A with King. Admission is $3-$5 and the lights go down at 7 p.m. All proceeds benefit ChathamArts and its arts and education programs and a future Youth Documentary Arts Program. —Kathy Justice
