Gang Gang Dance
Cat's Cradle—New York's Gang Gang Dance used to yield scattered blasts of kaleidoscopic sound over skitters and ellipses. Those sprees with drums, samplers, vocals and keyboards certainly warranted old associations with Animal Collective, Excepter and Black Dice. Since, though, Gang Gang has bounded beyond Excepter with tight but playful rhythmic constructions, stopping way short of Animal Collective's current pop focus while evolving—something Black Dice forgot to do after Beaches & Canyons. Proof: Gang Gang's latest, Saint Dymphna, is an engaging, somewhat subversive dance jubilee, sounding like the aural journals of a drug-jittery transcontinental exploration. The trio plays with Rainbow Arabia at 9 p.m. for $8-$10. —Grayson Currin
