Trophy Brewing & Pizza: Three barrels and a dream



If you happen to take your dirty clothing to the laundromat, I've found the perfect spot. It's on West Morgan Street in Raleigh. I've never been in it and know nothing about it except one thing—it's two doors and 100 feet or so from Trophy Brewing & Pizza Co.

Actually, Trophy is well worth visiting even if all of your clothes are clean. Trophy is, as they put it, "a three barrel nano brewery" that opened earlier this year in the former Burger Hut location. Brew and pizza sums up your options at Trophy, but there is plenty to choose in those two categories.

As a nano brewery, Trophy frequently introduces different beers to the menu, so no matter your favorite style, Trophy will likely have something to suit your taste. Experiment with a beer flight ($9) of four brews. A recent flight featured a wit, a rouge, a saison and an IPA. The witbier is a smooth, easy drink perfect for summer. The IPA has just enough bite to satisfy fans of that style. The rouge is a robust beer with subtle nuances. The saison was a too sweet and fruity for my taste, but it is a well-brewed beer.

Even if you're not a beer drinker, the pizza is reason enough to go to Trophy. Although brewing comes before pizza in Trophy's name, one bite of their specialty pies is testament that food is not an afterthought.

The "Most Loyal" comes laden with basil pesto, herb roasted chicken breast, mozzarella, roma tomato and honey. The result is light and fresh, a good warm weather choice.

Another impressive option is the "Best Dressed." Featuring a rich mix of pepperoni, bacon, lamb sausage, spinach, red onions, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese, it is a hearty pie that tiptoes up to the line of being overwhelming but stops just short at happy indulgence instead.

Other pizzas on the menu include the "Local Celebrity," which comes with spicy sopressata, kale, mushrooms, asparagus, mozzarella, ricotta and squash, and "The Daredevil," which boasts ghost chili pepper salami, tomato sauce, mozzarella, jalapeño, onions and siracha.

Consisting of a narrow bar area and some patio seating, Trophy is small, so it may take a while to find a seat, especially since the brewery has already become quite popular in a short time. The room is frequently buzzing as people chat and laugh as they sip drinks and reach for another slice.

Squeeze in and join them. You'll be glad you did, whether it's laundry day or not.
