Trio of Justice, Empty Sound

When: Sun., Jan. 4, 7 p.m. 2015

Richmond, Virginia’s Trio for Justice employs a simple but strange setup—there’s a drummer and a trombonist who adds percussion, plus a third member who shifts between bass trombone and tuba. The three-piece’s unlisted member, however, seems to be their combined versatility. Though they can and will play funk-heavy New Orleans-style marches, they drift into airy abstraction, where tunes curl in the air and rhythms threaten to run off the rails, and then float through surprisingly ponderous and brooding pieces. The membership is custom-made for such diversity. Reggie Pace, for instance, is known both for his sideman work with Bon Iver and Matthew E. White and his leadership role in the irrepressible and aptly named No BS! Brass Band. Drummer Devonne Harris is a multi-instrumentalist known for his production work, too, while Reginald Chapman is very active in groups of his own. Trio for Justice is an intriguing new outcropping of a scene that’s been especially productive in recent years. —Grayson Haver Currin
