Trampled By Turtles, The Apache Relay

When: Mon., May 31, 10 p.m. 2010

Though Duluth, Minn., bluegrass plunderers Trampled by Turtles come led by excellent singers who cut the nasal abrasion of their forebears with a comfit of pop sensibility, there's perhaps no better summary of the band's strengths and aims than the new instrumental "New Son/ Burnt Iron." The first half of the four-minute tune is loping and graceful, a mandolin playfully splashing against the banks of fiddle sweeps and plunking bass. Noteworthy romantics with a few strong ballads beneath their belt, Trampled by Turtles can charm and swoon. There's a pause, though, and it's off to the races, the mandolin sprinting between the rhythmic bustle of the band. A goofy but well-built rollick, the second side flashes the quintet's kinetic chops with maximum efficiency. The Apache Relay opens. —Grayson Currin
