Tracyanne & Danny, Lomelda

When: Fri., June 15, 8 p.m. 2018

After Camera Obscura's wonderful 2013 album, Desire Lines, it wasn't clear that we would ever hear Tracyanne Campbell sing again. Carey Lander, the Scottish indie-pop band's keyboardist and Campbell's close friend, passed away from cancer, and Cam Ob fell silent. For those who love that irreplaceable voice—"a strip of emerald-green ribbon, matte on one side, iridescent on the other, slowly tossing on a breeze," I said in Pitchfork—this prospect was hard to bear. More specific than love songs, Campbell always returns to the topic of wresting friendship from heartbreak's aftermath, so it's apt that she returned to music with a new friend last month. On Tracyanne & Danny's self-titled Merge debut, she joins forces with Danny Coughlan of Crybaby, whose vintage pop idiom permeates these songs. It's a fine return, if a slightly tentative one, but if Campbell's joy to be writing music with a friend again is marked by a certain caution, our joy to hear her sing again is unbridled. —Brian Howe
