Townes Van Zandt & Hank Williams tribute with Magnolia Collective, Josh Moore, Christopher Jones & the Naturalists, Effingham, Anna Rose Beck, Jokes & Jokes & Jokes

When: Sun., Jan. 1, 9:30 p.m. 2012

It's a tribute to perhaps country's two finest truth-tellers and artists, Hank Williams and Townes Van Zandt, both of whom passed away on New Year's Day (44 years apart). Hank Sr. is the Robert Johnson of country, helping to define the form before dying young. Williams' plainspoken honky-tonk standardized the earnest, unaffected simplicity that's still traditional country's calling card. The patron saint of Texas country, Van Zandt was a poet/ storyteller with a love of life's nomadic wastrels, keenly chronicling their restless lonesome ache. Among those giving life to their songs are Magnolia Collective, which just released the country/folk Ghost Stories EP, and Effingham, a sharp indie folk act with a dark Pixies-ish swagger.
