TOWN HALL CREATIVE MEETING

COMMON GROUND THEATRE, DURHAM

SATURDAY, APRIL 4

Hands Up: 6 Playwrights, 6 Testaments, a sextet of short monologues about the African-American experience in the modern police state, originated at The New Black Fest following the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. When we spoke with Monet Marshall in February, she was about to direct the Durham production. She promised that its many collaborators—MOJOOA Performing Arts Company, ArtsCenter Stage, Ladies of the Triangle Theatre and Common Ground Theatre—would parlay it into an open forum where locals could share their own stories, and parlay that into a new production starring locals this summer. So far, they're making good on the long-range plan: This Durham meeting follows one at The ArtsCenter last Saturday. The producers aren't just holding a space for discussion, they're also gathering material and participants for the community show now set for The ArtsCenter in late June. You can get help from LoTT to develop your story into a work of theater, dance, or visual art—or you can simply lend your voice to a conversation about community, race and social justice in the Triangle. 2–4 p.m., free, 4815B Hillsborough Rd., Durham, 919-384-7817, www.cgtheatre.com.
