Tough Guys Don't Dance

When: Wed., June 12, 8 p.m. 2013

Norman Mailer could be one of the most brilliant of all American writers. He could also be the guy who made Tough Guys Don't Dance. Adapting his own novel, Mailer's 1987 directorial debut can be defined by who produced it: On the one hand there was Francis Ford Coppola, while on the other there was the schlockmeister team of Golan and Globus from B-movie factory Cannon Films. Though screened out of competition at Cannes, this crime thriller is memorable for three things: 1) a cheeky trailer in which Mailer reads audience reactions to the film; 2) Mailer's Golden Raspberry-winning direction and 3) a scene in which lead Ryan O'Neal gets some bad news and repeatedly extols, "Oh man! Oh God!" while the camera spins around. O'Neal reportedly wanted that bit cut, which would have denied the scene the 4 million-plus views it's racked up on YouTube as "Worst Line Reading Ever." Experience the strange, campy, overwrought misfire of a literary genius at this rare cinematic screening, which, like all Cinema Overdrive events, will feature some damn fine classic trailers to boot. —Zack Smith
