Torche, Holly Hunt, Colossus

When: Thu., May 10, 9 p.m. 2012

Not long after the release of their second and best album to date, 2008's Meanderthal, Miami bubble-gum-and-Jawbox metal quartet Torche slimmed to a trio. Old fans wondered how they'd still swing their pop-to-doom without the support of guitarist Juan Montoya, but they managed just fine, storming through the songs with the same slash-and-burn appeal as before. When they began recording new material, though, that early incandescence wasn't there, at least not consistently. Torche's two proper releases since—a long EP called Songs for Singles and this year's tedious Volcom debut, Harmonicraft—certainly have their heart-racing moments, but Torche (now back to a quartet, with a different guitarist) seems to be aiming to fill its old shoes again and again. They sound tired, and at least when I saw them earlier this year, looked it, too, as if going through the motions of trying to be the most exciting heavy pop band around had finally started to take its toll. Holly Hunt and Colossus open the 9 p.m. show. —Grayson Currin
