Toon & the Real Laww, Cesar Comanche, Skyblew, ©osmo

When: Fri., Oct. 11, 9 p.m. 2013

If you're planning to write a comprehensive history of Triangle hip-hop, show up and take some notes. As the scene approaches its 20th anniversary, Durham's Toon & The Real Laww have emerged as righteous rap ambassadors. They've just released an ambitious joint EP—Toon's You Know the Name and The Real Laww's End The Beginning—on the new Cardigan Records label. These guys have swapped the area's once-heralded boom-bap terrain with their playful, anything-goes rap tunes. One of the scene's pioneers, Cesar Comanche, will resuscitate whatever energy its golden era still has left. No torches will be passed, but an eternal hip-hop flame will be shared. With Skyblew and ©osmo. —Eric Tullis

Price: $8-10
