Clubs & Concerts

When: Sat., May 16 2015

The lazy, hot days of summer are approaching, and the Saturdays in Saxapahaw concert series is back to help usher them in—and, ultimately, out. Until September, a passel of North Carolina acts will drop in to offer free early evening entertainment, from the driving bluegrass of Big Fat Gap to the heart-wrenching tunes of The Tender Fruit. This week's installment features Tonk, a Raleigh Americana act that pulls liberally from '70s country and Southern rock to power its swinging and shuffling songs. Jay Brown, a longtime Tift Merritt collaborator, fronts the outfit, while Chatham County Line bassist Greg Readling takes a seat at the keys. If you can't make this show, Tonk plays another gratis set on Thursday evening at American Tobacco Campus. For more on that one, see page 22. 6 p.m., free, 1735 Saxapahaw-Bethlehem Church Rd., Saxapahaw, 336-525-2101, —Allison Hussey
