Tommy Emmanuel, Jo Gore & the Alternative

When: Fri., June 7, 8 p.m. 2013

When I was in college in Austin, Texas, in the 1980s, a frequent local-pride debate involved whether Stevie Ray Vaughan or Eric Johnson was our city's best guitarist. It was classic apples vs. oranges, really, or blues-rock vs. art-rock in this case. A decade later, I happened to catch a performance by Australian virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel, who ventured to places neither of them ever reached. He's that good—enough to have earned Best Acoustic Guitarist honors from the readers of Guitar Player magazine twice in recent years. His latest, The Colonel & The Governor, teams him with British jazz ace Martin Taylor. Arrive early for an opening set by Durham's own Jo Gore & The Alternative. (And if instrumental virtuosity is your thing, consider returning to the Carolina on Saturday for ukulele wunderkind Jake Shimabukuro.) —Peter Blackstock
