TOBACCO ROAD BLUES EXCHANGE

VARIOUS VENUES, DURHAM & RALEIGH

THURSDAY, AUG. 6–SUNDAY, AUG. 9

Remember the late '90s swing revival? As that went mainstream and receded, a similar movement based around blues and the dancing of old juke-joints replaced it. And as blues is more raw, slow and close to the ground, blues dancing is especially aware of the bump and grind. Blues dance styles span a spectrum from jookin' to ballroomin', according to Jeff Miller, an instructor, DJ and performer. "Jookin' is very angular and harsh with sharp movements. Ballroomin' is very smooth, and your body posture is more upright and elegant," Miller says. The music, too, runs from old-school Delta stuff to Chicago, alongside contemporary artists who don't play strict blues. Miller cites "Knockin'," by the Carolina Chocolate Drops and Luminescent Orchestrii, as a favorite. "It's not traditional 12-bar blues, but it has that pulse," he says. Miller is among the DJs playing this long weekend. North Carolina native Seth Walker headlines Saturday evening's big dance. He infuses his blues with wide-ranging jazz, soul and Americana touches. Tickets cost $50–$90. Visit RDUblues.com. —Chris Parker
