To Rome With Love

Rated R 95 min. 2012

Woody Allen plays a retired opera director who stages an asinine version of the famous opera Pagliacci. Meanwhile, in another of four seemingly unrelated stories. Roberto Benigni plays an average citizen who becomes famous for no discernable reason, while Penélope Cruz is a high-class prostitute who must pretend to be married to an accidental client and Alec Baldwin visits a younger version of himself and tries to keep him from starting an ill-advised affair. A little bit of online opera research reveals that Allen is making a fun game of exploring a key theme of Pagliacci: an actor's responsibility to entertain despite his personal sadness. Or, more broadly, the necessity of laughter to combat life's sad meaninglessness.
