TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb, Campfires & Constellations

When: Thu., March 7, 10 p.m. 2013

While any band can cram a few disparate styles into an LP, TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb somehow don't force their junction of gorgeous acoustic textures, Bob Dylan-like rambles and David Allan Coe beer-and-cocaine fuck-you stomp. On last year's Manufacturing Joy, they wend from a Dave Matthews-suggestive woodwinds-and-acoustic guitar opener to a succession of country-blues brawlers and then to the honky-tonk tropical shuffle "Day Sleeper." Kong & the Bomb's potty-mouthed, literate outlaw country is an excellent antidote for anyone who feels neither like a son or brother to Mumford or the Avetts—this stuff's roots-based, all right, but it sure ain't cute. Campfires & Constellations open. —Corbie Hill
