Tinsley Ellis, Lockdown Blues Band

When: Sat., March 19, 9:30 p.m. 2011

"Your face will melt off, and your children will weep over your exploded body," said Charlie Sheen, referring to the drug called "Charlie Sheen." He may as well have been talking about the music of Tinsley Ellis, who plays big blues-rock guitar with Southern roots. With bombastic, virtuosic power delivered from the gut, Ellis suggests a hybrid of B.B. King and Cream, with guitar solos that scream, and vocals that shout out with the cocksureness of a man who's spent more than a quarter of a century perfecting his craft. Opening for Ellis is Durham's Lockdown Blues Band; their straight-up blues adds horns and the occasional foray into some laid-back soul. Tickets to the 9:30 p.m. show are $15 (or $18 for those under 21). —Andrew Ritchey
