Times New Viking, Toddlers

When: Thu., June 2, 9:30 p.m. 2011

Columbus, Ohio, trio Times New Viking stripped away the static and hiss of its first several albums for this year's Merge Records debut, Dancer Equired. They made that decision out of necessity after returning from the road to find the four-track that had given them their trademark high-volume, low-fidelity sound missing. The move pulls much of the noise from their noise pop, putting the focus squarely on numbers sung with abandon, enthusiasm and relatively little interest in keys. These tunes, it turns out, are the stuff of first-rate indie pop—exclamatory and urgent and packing a mix of narratives and mantras that make Dancer Equired open to both pontification and shout-alongs. Unabashedly catchy, this iteration of Times New Viking has lost some of those early fans who were more interested in the saturated sounds than the songs beneath them. But those listeners were always temporary; the refrains of prime new cuts "It's a Culture" and "Fuck Her Tears" are forever. The Toddlers open the 9:30 p.m. show.—Grayson Currin

Price: $10-12
