Time of the Gypsies

When: Wed., Sept. 28, 7 p.m. 2011

Big screen meets big band at Motorco for this special movie-plus-concert event presented by Duke Performances. Time of the Gypsies, Emir Kusturica's 1988 feature film about a Romany kid in Sarajevo with telekinetic powers, screens at 7 p.m., followed by a live performance by horn and percussion extroverts D-Town Brass. Duke artist-in-residence Goran Bregovic, a Balkan brass bandleader, wrote the film's soundtrack (and performs Oct. 16 at Duke's Page Auditorium with his Wedding & Funeral Orchestra in another Duke Performances event). The strangely symphonic D-Town Brass takes an experimental approach to all things grooving, like a marching band constantly transferring subway trains. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
