Tim McGraw

When: Sat., July 24, 7 p.m. 2010

"Southern Voice," the Tim McGraw number that plays over the closing credits of the movie in which he co-starred, The Blind Side, encapsulates my relationship with commercial country music perfectly. Chart affiliations aside, "Southern Voice" is a booming, hooky rock song, with McGraw's Louisiana-born twang the only certifiably "country" element. Then there are the gratuitous namedrops—everybody from Hank Aaron and Tom Petty to Rosa Parks and Billy Graham—bound and determined to exclude no demographic. Still, why is it that I catch myself singing along whenever the chorus rolls through? Buying Dierks Bentley records feels like much less of a guilty pleasure for this card-carrying No Depression-ite because of his collaborations with Patty Griffin and the McCourys. Love & Theft kicks things off at 7 p.m. —Rick Cornell

Price: $30–$70
