Tim McGraw is now an elder statesman of country music. To wit, Taylor Swift’s debut “Tim McGraw” single is now nine years old. The singer rose to fame amid country’s golden ’90s era, staying on the wings of that decade’s superstars, like Alan Jackson and George Strait. He made a name for himself with novelty tracks like “I Like It, I Love It” before cementing himself into those higher ranks at the turn of the millennium with riskier fare like “Red Rag Top.” Since, Mr. Faith Hill has dabbled in acting and philanthropy to the detriment of his music. His first release with Swift’s Big Machine Records banked on the frat brother stylings du jour, awkwardly relying on spoken-word rapping and auto-tune. His last three singles, however, seem to be a return to form, appropriately applying gravitas to the story songs of his early years. —Karlie Justus Marlowe
