TWO ART OPENINGS
JOHN HOPE FRANKLIN CENTER—Death is a theme at tonight's opening exhibition receptions for four Southern artists, but not in a macabre way. Mud, Twigs, Tin and Wood features art by late artists Jimmy Lee Suddeth and Mose Tolliver, and James Arthur Snipes' framed tin pieces. Local photographer elin o'Hara slavick's Oma/ Auma uses color and black and white to portray her German grandmother's last days. The openings start at 5:30 p.m. and last until 7 p.m. —Karlie Justus

COLOSSUS, SICK ELECTRIC
THE RESERVOIR—You may have heard of Raleigh metal hounds Colossus by now, but you may not know its first full-length, Rift of the Pandimensional Under-Gods, is due later this fall. No black metal here, no hyper-speed crunch: just the sound of some bros meting out their obsession with priests, maidens and ladykillers wearing leather. With Sick Electric at 10 p.m. for free. —Chris Toenes
