Dot Jackson

Quail Ridge Books & Music--Longtime Charlotte Observer columnist and reporter Dot Jackson has been considering her debut novel for years, stowing away bits of Appalachian mythology and folklore, slowly weaving them together in a cohesive fashion: Refuge is the result, and it finds protagonist Mary Seneca Steele going to bed contemplating what she will wear during her suicide. She awakes to a strange fiddle tune and steals her children and her husband's car, joining a surreal journey to find meaning in her life by discovering a mountain cove ancestry she never knew existed. Jackson reads at 7 p.m.

Chapel Hill

Third Mind Collective

Local 506--Thomas Herndon leads Twilighter and its parental Third Mind Collective. His band of crackled, illiterati far-out folk, which recorded a brilliant obscurity back in 2003, has regrouped and is on the verge of its sophomore album. Twilighter headlines this Third Mind presentation with Make Out With Bears. As always, things could get interesting. Pay $6 at 10 p.m.
