SCHOOLKIDS RECORDS—Marissa Nadler is a fair-voiced Massachusetts beauty who's finally finding an overdue fan base after three terrific albums. The crowd's late arrival is understandable: Songs III: Bird on the Water, released stateside Tuesday, is her most complete album to date and one of the year's absolute best releases. A floating attempt to move beyond the "rose-colored dreams" of loves that hurt her in the past, Songs III finds Nadler covering Cohen but wrapping her songs in spectacularly static, completely magnetic atmospheres indicative of her fascination with metal band Earth and English guitarist James Blackshaw. Tonight's set cellist Orion Rigel Dommisse beneath the fluorescents should be odd but striking. Free, but buy the record. —Grayson Currin

STATE FARMERS' MARKET—Watermelon Day is a celebration of size, taste and versatility. Featuring a largest-watermelon contest as well as an eating contest, the event is packed with family-friendly activities and lasts from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. —Megan Stein
