Louis Armstrong's New Orleans

Regulator Bookshop--Thomas Brothers reads from his latest, which explains how and why New Orleans' unique cultural brew led to Louis Armstrong's unique genius. The talk starts at 7 p.m.

Hou Hsiao-Hsien

Duke University--There are very few names in world cinema that inspire hushed reverence among the cognoscenti, but Hou Hsiao-hsien's is one of them. This important Taiwanese director's films are minimalist to the point of obliterating the distinction between image and reality. His latest, Three Times, tells three separate love stories set in 1911, 1966 and 2005 and starring the same actors. It shows in Richard White at 8 p.m. for free. --David Fellerath

Chapel Hill

Crucial Fiya

Wetlands--The dearth of local live reggae warrants a visit to this show, with soul vibrations from a group who have shared the stage with biggies like Keith Poppin and Mikey Dread. If that's not enough, it's is billed as a reggae dance party. The $5 joint lights at 9:30 p.m. --Chris Toenes
