The Graves of Fairmount, Birds & Arrow
NIGHTLIGHT—Next week, Portastatic—the side project turned main song outlet of Superchunk's Mac McCaughan—will release a 44-track collection chronicling the project's two-decade ascension from living-room troubadour to full band. But Graves of Fairmont sprang from Paul O'Keefe—a former Red Collar drummer who moved to Chapel Hill after a life spent obsessed with Chapel Hill bands like Portastatic—sometime last year as a fully formed sound: His debut Calendar & Casualties meets between McCaughan and Red House Painters, using details about friends on Ecstasy and romances gone south as springboards for dreamy, well-textured acoustic pop. Think Stuart Murdoch starting Belle & Sebastian as an art-school project around here, and you'll get it. Birds & Arrows is Pete Connolly and Sweet By & By's Andrea Nell, a couple singing spare, sonorous folk tunes marked by grace and harmony. Also, The Championship. The 9 p.m. show costs $5. —Grayson Currin
