"I'm here to chew bubblegum, and to kick ass. I'm all out of bubblegum." "Brother, life's a bitch, and she's back in heat." "White line's in the middle of the road. That's the worst place to drive." Pretty much the best movie ever made, John Carpenter's 1988 sci-fi satire They Live is a bizarro combination of straightforward sci-fi action movie, deconstruction of said sci-fi action movie and vicious takedown on 1980s materialism. Wrestler "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, in his finest performance, plays a drifter named Nada who stumbles upon a pair of sunglasses that reveal the world is filled with zombie-like aliens subjugating humanity with subliminal messages (money reads "THIS IS YOUR GOD"). He attempts to expose the conspiracy, which results in, among other things, a nearly seven-minute fight to get his friend (Keith David) to put the alien-revealing sunglasses on. A special edition Blu-Ray came out last year, and there's a terrific short Jonathan Lethem book where he provides commentary rewatching the film, but check out this rare opportunity to see it on the big screen. And make sure you bring your sunglasses. —Zack Smith
