The Whigs, Deap Vally

When: Tue., June 11, 8 p.m. 2013

Enjoy the Company, last year's album from The Whigs, pulled back the mask Scooby-Doo style on a college rock/power pop band. The Atlanta trio's prior three albums showcased a gift for hooks, but their put-on noisy guitar swagger tried too hard. The result came closer to the Goo Goo Dolls than the Replacements, with more cheese than sleaze. A shower and shave revealed something closer to Marshall Crenshaw or Tommy Keene. Indeed, Enjoy the Company succeeds mostly because of terrific tracks such as the bounding "Waiting" and the heartfelt shambles of "Thank You." Deap Vally opens the show but loses the spelling bee. —Chris Parker
