The Triangle Soundpainting Sextet with poet Ricky Garni

When: Fri., March 14, 6 p.m. 2014

It's like chamber music in Esperanto. Created in the '70s by Walter Thompson, soundpainting is a sign language used to compose on the fly. Conductors guide improvisations with a vast system of gestures that carry commands both specific and broad. Drummer Shannon Morrow founded the Triangle Soundpainting Orchestra in Durham almost a decade ago; soundpainting now comes to Carrboro courtesy of Felix Obelix mastermind Wendy Spitzer. She conducts The Triangle Soundpainting Sextet, an offshoot of the Orchestra that includes Anne Gomez on tenor sax and Chris Eubank on cello. Today, they play around a reading by witty and prolific poet Ricky Garni. —Brian Howe
