The Thin Red Line

When: Wed., May 15, 7 p.m. 2013

The 1998 comeback film for reclusive director Terrence Malick, the J.D. Salinger of cinema, The Thin Red Line features an Oscar-worthy performance by Adrien Brody. At least that's the legend. It wound up on the cutting room floor along with many other major stars (Mickey Rourke, Bill Pullman, Billy Bob Thornton and Gary Oldman were among those cut from the film altogether). The first feature by Malick since 1978's Days of Heaven, it's a loose adaptation of the novel by James Jones (From Here to Eternity) about a fictional WWII battle. It includes Sean Penn, John Cusack, John Travolta, George Clooney and other stars—many of whom you'll miss if you blink. But that's the thing with Malick: His films are less about the performances than the atmosphere, and sweet lord, you will feel every drop of rain and bit of mud from this battle. The film got seven Oscar nominations and signaled a new phase of Malick's career in which he made movies on a regular basis, most recently The Tree of Life (2011), To the Wonder (2012) and yet another one due out next year. —Zack Smith
