The Skull Defekts, Midnight Plus One, Hem of His Garment

When: Thu., May 1, 9:30 p.m. 2014

Swedish band The Skull Defekts aggregate several musicians with noteworthy experimental pasts, including deep drone and noise impresario Joachim Nordwall and Lungfish seer Daniel Higgs. But most of their music, or at least the best of it, is hard-hitting, cathartic post-punk, with guitars that cut at severe angles and drums that tremble and march like they're pushing an army into war. That's not to say this rock is dry: It's psychedelic and saturated, with those experimental impulses routed through the band's hypnotizing insistence. Their new album, Dances in Dreams of the Known Unknown, is a dashing and daunting affair, full of power and piss and riffs and rhythms. Higgs won't be with them this time around, but they're still a force to behold. Midnight Plus One headlines, while The Hem of His Garment opens. —Grayson Haver Currin
