The Shucks

When: Fri., Jan. 4, 10 p.m. 2013

Between fiddler Jessika Brust's tender croon and guitarist Travis Creed's reedy twang, The Shucks have sugar and spice covered. The Raleigh quintet play hopped-up roots with rockabilly swagger, fishtailing all over Americana with abandon. Their spirited foot-tappers offer balance with Brust's velvety ballads and otherwise sinewy rockers. During "If It Ain't Meant to Last," a fiery ode to Mr. Right Now, Brust argues in favor of carpe diem, asking "Why skip ahead to the crying times?" The free gig starts at 10 p.m. —Chris Parker
