The Second City

When: Fri., Feb. 8, 8 p.m. 2013

It's difficult to write about an improvisational comedy troupe because ... we literally have no idea what they're going to do. However, there's a fair chance that someone in this show by the Chicago company Second City will be on Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show or some similar venerable comedy program within the next five years. Aside from the glory of SCTV, Second City has proven to be the Ivy League of comedy (as opposed to Ivy League comedy writers from Harvard). Alumni of the past 20 years include Tina Fey, Jane Lynch, Stephen Colbert, Eric Stonestreet, Jon Glaser and Adam McKay. Put bluntly: They know their stuff. This new revue, "Laughing Matters," promises a look at the need for comedy in these turbulent times—and there's a good chance they'll deliver the laughs. Tickets run $27–37 for the 8 p.m. show, which is part of the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival. On Sunday in this same city-same room-same festival, deadpan standup star Steven Wright returns. —Zack Smith

Price: $27-37
