The Return of the Living Dead

When: Wed., Oct. 26, 8 p.m. 2011

OK, history lesson! The original Night of the Living Dead from 1968 was co-written by George Romero and John Russo. The two split up, with Romero retaining the rights to make zombie movies he created himself, while Russo retained the rights to the title "Living Dead." Thus, each made his own series of zombie flicks, and while such Romero joints as Dawn of the Dead are better known in the mass culture, the 1985 adaptation of Russo's novel The Return of the Living Dead is a rip-roaring affair in its own right. Screenwriter and director Dan O'Bannon, who also worked on the likes of Alien, Heavy Metal and Total Recall, wanted to go in a different direction from Romero—hence the tagline, "They're back from the grave and ready to party!" Great crusty actor Clu Gulager stars in this tale of zombies unleashed in Louisville, Ky., featuring a ton of slapstick, humorous dialogue and a soundtrack with The Cramps, The Damned and, appropriately, The Flesh Eaters. Jam with the dead in this Cinema Overdrive feature at 8 p.m.; the $5.50 admission also gets you a ton of classic trailers. —Zack Smith
