The Psychedelic Furs, Spacehog

When: Tue., July 30, 8 p.m. 2013

The glamorous, psychedelic art-rock of opening act Spacehog is textured in swirling keyboards, cotton-candy guitar and sinister basslines. The band is tuneful and fun in the same way as a drunken tryst—it's good while it lasts, but it doesn't stay with you. That holds for last year's As It Is on Earth, Spacehog's first album in eight years. Meanwhile, the Psychedelic Furs haven't made any new music since 1991, but they still sound somewhat relevant, thanks to the legacy of their four albums. Nascent post-punk guitar toughens the paisley jangle, while percolating synth gilds the edges, similar to the way in which the Lou Reed-styled speak-sing verses of Richard Butler are leavened by an airy chorus croon. —Chris Parker
