When: Oct. 18-Nov. 3 2012
The Triangle hadn't before seen puppet theater like Torry Bend's The Paper Hat Game when it debuted at Duke University's Sheafer Lab Theater last September. Wowed by Bend's marionette-like puppets and set design, as well as the seamless integration of Raquel Salvatella de Prada's video, Indy Week's Kate Dobbs Ariail raved in a five-star review, "Even leaving out the wonderfully articulated and visually expressive marionettes, the visual effects are fantastic." Bend has restaged the drama in a slightly expanded form for a full run at Manbites Dog Theater.
The story follows Bend's friend Scotty, who silently folds and hands out paper hats from newspapers on Chicago's elevated trains. The complex ethos of the city is revealed through the riders' reactions, a traumatic event in Scotty's life and the healing power of community. Bend's craftsmanship and highly imaginative design will make you gasp with pleasure. Thursday's opening show is at 8:15 p.m.; performances continue through Nov. 3. Tickets run $5–$17. —Chris Vitiello
