The Notebook

Rated PG-13 121 min. 2004

Twin 13-year-old boys endure the ancillary horrors of war in this relentlessly grim WWII drama. Shortlisted for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2014 Academy Awards, it's an admirable piece of craftsmanship if you've got the stomach for it. Abused and mistreated by almost everyone in their lives, the boys respond by undertaking a regimen to toughen themselves that includes beating each other unconcious and fasting for days. The goal? "We want to conquer pain, and cold and hunger." The bleakness doesn't end, but neither does it build. Based on the novel by Hungarian writer Agota Kristof, the film is technically adept but there's no structure to the story—terrible things happen, then more terrible things happen, then it's over.
