The New Pornographers, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

When: Sun., Nov. 23, 8 p.m. 2014

Supergroups have notoriously brief shelf lives, making the continued success and innovation of The New Pornographers for 15 years and six LPs a minor miracle. September's Brill Bruisers is a supremely satisfying collection, too, marshaling the eight-piece band's profusion of riches with oomph. From girl groups and glam to Game Theory, principal songwriter Carl "A.C." Newman plunders five decades of pop, giving life to melodies wrought from recognizable parts but fused in unexpected ways. In the chorus of the new LP's title track, for example, Newman slips in an exquisite, upward-gliding "ooh" that ignites like fireworks. Brill Bruisers is full of moments like that. Meanwhile, with his louche presence, Dan Bejar provides crucial scuro to Newman's irrepressible chiaro. Onstage, this octet, featuring Neko Case on this tour, is not quite the streamlined hot rod they are on record, but these songs won't sing themselves. 8 p.m., $30, 300 E. Main St., 919-967-9053, Klein
