The Melvins, Le Butcherettes

When: Fri., July 3, 9 p.m. 2015

If Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover—the two long-standing members of the pan-metal weirdo legion the Melvins—were professional athletes, they'd fall into the category of Cal Ripken Jr. and Robert Parish, top-tier performers forever noted for their perseverance and longevity. For three decades now, the Melvins have offered at least one release nearly every year, while touring like madmen addicted to asphalt, gasoline and blaring amplifiers. As with Parish and Ripken, the results have not always been perfect, but the effort has always been admirable. Osborne and Crover have kept busy in part by continually rotating the lineup around them, so as to add new elements to their storming, stomping hard rock. After an extended run as a quartet with Big Business and a 2012 trek with bassist Trevor Dunn, they cut last year's brisk and strange Hold It In with Jeff Pinkus and Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers. Despite the necessary weirdness, some of the songs push as close to pop-punk as the Melvins have ever come—a fascinating arrival after 32 years as a band. Pinkus joins them here, as does captivating and chaotic Mexico trio Le Butcherettes. 9 p.m., $16–$18, 300 E. Main St., Carrboro, 919-967-9053, Haver Currin

Price: $16-$18
