THE MADS ARE BACK: TRACE BEAULIEU AND FRANK CONNIFF

Mystery Science Theater 3000, now a borderline cottage industry, has come a long way since its days as a no-budget local TV show built around the universal experience of making fun of bad films. The Internet ensures that its cheesy-movie insults live on (and that you can look up the most obscure references), and lord knows cheesy movies are a seemingly unending resource. Since it went off the air in 1999, episodes of the show have continued to circulate on DVD (and other, less legal forms), and its cast of cinematic back talkers has gone on to new movie-mocking comedy outlets such as Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic. But now Netflix is planning to revive the original MST3K, with Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt as the mad scientists tormenting our new hero and his found-object robots. In the meantime, you can catch the best-known "Mads," Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff, on a movie-riffing tour of their own. Why has the snark proven so enduring? Perhaps it's less about tearing down the art of others than elevating it through observation, reminding moviegoers that we are never truly alone in the dark. That, and it's just fun to mock cheesy movies. —Zack Smith
