The Love Language, The Rutabega

When: Wed., Nov. 6, 9 p.m. 2013

If, in the future, you need an example of what indie rock sounded like in 2013, The Rutabega would make for a fine time capsule. The riffs on this year's Brother the Lights Don't Work build patiently to fetching crescendos with vibrant fuzz, like Dinosaur Jr. taking aim at simpler hooks. But the singing is relatively clean, tinged by reverb and punctuated by huge oohs and aahs. This is post-Funeral pop played as slacker rock. The Love Language's 2013 LP, Ruby Red, feels equally current. Their typically taut pop tunes explode, moving with the swiftness of San Francisco's au courant garage scene. —Jordan Lawrence
