For those who wouldn’t think it possible to create a hokey, half-witted A-Team
knockoff, then this too-slick-by-half adaptation of Andy Diggle’s comic book series will make you a believer. After five members of an elite Special Forces team are betrayed and given up for dead in the Bolivian jungle by their duplicitous minder, Max (Jason Patric, channeling Robert Downey Jr. playing Dr. No), they form an uneasy partnership with a slinky stranger, Aisha (Zoe Saldana), in order to extract revenge. The action is loud and fun, but the groan-worthy jokes come just as thick and fast. The 98-minute running time isn’t enough to fully explicate either characters or plot, much like the music videos and commercials on which director Sylvain White once cut his teeth. In this creative void, the actors look as directionless as driftwood. Only Idris Elba escapes intact; meanwhile, Saldana is relegated to eye-candy with a wardrobe, Jeffrey Dean Morgan will miss the relative acuity of Watchmen
and Chris Evans’ yucks quickly grow tiresome.
