The Lord of the Rings—In Concert: The Fellowship of the Ring

When: Fri., Sept. 18, 7:30 p.m. and Sat., Sept. 19, 7:30 p.m. 2015

Before the North Carolina Symphony officially launches an exciting season next weekend with a world premiere and a marquee star, it serves as the city’s house band of sorts in an audacious multimedia show. For two nights, The Fellowship of the Ring, the first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, plays on massive screens without music but with dialogue. More than 200 musicians will work in tandem to complete the experience. The symphony plays the parts while the N.C. Master Chorale and the Raleigh Boychoir add the voices (learned in the traditional Tolkien tongues, no less) in real time. It’s an undertaking not quite as massive as a hike to Mount Doom, though it is an intriguing prospect to see this kind of across-the-aisle cooperation among the city and several arts organizations to (hopefully) pull off an event of this scale. —Grayson Haver Currin
