The Light in the Piazza

When: June 4-27 2010

Traveling to a foreign country entails partaking in the local culture. Some take that to mean dating the natives. In this musical, based on a celebrated novella by Chapel Hill writer Elizabeth Spencer, American Margaret Johnson travels through Italy with her daughter Clara in 1953. Clara gets close to Fabrizio, a young man, while her mother opposes the match. The conflict deepens into a memorable and moving story. The musical opened on Broadway in 2005 and nabbed six Tony Awards. Haskell Fitz-Simons directs this production. Tickets are $20 for adults and $17 for students and seniors. On the first Sunday performance, tickets are $10. —Sarah Ewald
