The Last Exorcism

Rated PG-13 100 min. 2010

Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) does double time as a preacher and demonologist, but he's a charlatan. A troubled soul leads him to seek redemption through participating in a tell-all exposé, a confessional documentary illustrating the tricks behind exorcism. Camera crew in tow, Cotton journeys to a small farm where the brutal deaths of livestock are linked to the farmer's daughter, Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell). Here the film functions much like the found footage-horrors of the Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, with plenty of gristly images of Nell's transformations, the crumbling Sweetzer farm and animal corpses. As Cotton attempts to extract the evil from Nell, the plot turns on itself to reveal a darker conceit, the black heart of Christian fundamentalism. The final reveal somewhat saves the film from an otherwise failed ending.
